Fiercely divided opinion on BYOD despite ‘hype’

By ECM Plus staff

ECM Plus /London/ +++ A new survey has revealed that fears are rising around the hidden costs of BYOD deployment – as well as ‘class divides’ and evidence that company managers are using BYOD to ‘pacify’  staff.

Moreover, some IT managers are even asking ‘is it worth surrendering control just to raise staff morale?’

Opinion is still divided when it comes to implementing ‘Bring Your Own Device’ strategies within businesses, with many at the top suggesting that such deployments create more problems than they solve. Continue reading

Dutch invoke FirstSpirit for content integration

The general entrance of the House of Represent...

Dutch House of Representatives

e-Spirit and TopForce implement  standardized intranet with SAP portal integration for the Dutch.

ECM Plus – The Dutch government is to consolidate its intranet across its ministries with a content management system supplied by FirstSpirit.

According to the company, e-Spirit and system integrator TopForce have been selected to undertake the project work for the integration. The e-Spirit AG software will replace various different legacy systems in the ministries and will be combining content from the IT systems into a central content integration platform.

According to FirstSpirit, t he result will be a unified intranet portal for the nearly 120,000 Dutch government employees that support local, personalised access to all important content, data and applications for the benefit of Dutch people.

The “Rijksportaal” project is being implemented by the portal specialist TopForce and e-Spirit for the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. FirstSpirit and the concept presented jointly by e-Spirit and TopForce stood out during the decision process as the only proposal able to meet the various needs of the Dutch organization. Among the primary reasons for choosing FirstSpirit were the robust SAP NetWeaver portal integration; the open system architecture for integrating such varied external systems as document management systems, and Microsoft SharePoint; and the strikingly superior usability and performance. As a content integration system, FirstSpirit allows users to continue use of SAP portal user roles and thus enables content publishing to target groups, such as those at the ministerial, departmental, or user levels for example. Using the straightforward editor’s interface in the content integration system, portal content can be created and managed by any employee without any prior knowledge of SAP.

“With a Rijksportaal based on FirstSpirit, government employees will in the future have an intranet that uses the “Single Sign-on” principle to efficiently provide all the required applications, data, and documents in a centralized work- and information platform” commented Robert Bredlau, Director of International Business Development at e-Spirit. “We’re very pleased to have acquired, together with TopForce, this important European contract and to have impressed such an elite customer as the Dutch government with our content management and integration solution. This validates the path we have taken, which is based on organic international growth through the cultivation of a competent partner network”.

The next step will be to migrate the two intranets of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment, along with all general editorial content, to the FirstSpirit platform. This will be followed by a rollout of the new system in the other ministries.

Getting in a lather over intranets

Consumer brand behemoth taps Aptimize for intranet

ECMPlus – Intranet specialist Aptimize is giving Cussons a major boost with its internal communications strategy.

Cussons, which owns brands such as Imperial Leather has opted for web optimisation technology for its new global intranet project.

According to the company, the new intranet will act as a hub of corporate-wide communications and collaboration.

The homepage on its desk-based employees’ PCs is a SharePoint 2007 intranet which enables the firm to work in shared workspaces and read items from across the corporation on a range of topics, such as people, brands and corporate social responsibility.

Cussons will use Aptimize to accelerate delivery of intranet through content optimisation and compression.

Cussons said it had already achieved an immediate decrease in HTML requests and downloaded page size, more than halving the time it takes popular pages to load and a reduction of many gigabytes of network traffic per week.

Cusson’s Mark Cadwaladr said: ‘We knew the network and server environments we were using were world-class but we were still seeing ten second load times in some markets with slower connection speeds. That was not acceptable to us in terms of delivering a first rate experience to all. We wanted to make using our intranet as great an experience as we possibly could. We reached out to Application Performance to visit and perform a one day Proof of Concept using Aptimize. The results were pretty instantaneous convincing us that Aptimize could well be the solution we were looking for. Since launch the feedback has been universally positive, from senior management in the UK to employees in far-flung locations across the Group.”

Intranets get collaborative, go mobile

Interact Intranet Version 4.6 boasts collaborative features and mobile accessibility – by Paul Quigley – Interact Intranet Version 4.6: New powerful collaborative features and mobile accessibility – Interact, has announced the availability of Interact Version 4.6. Version 4.6 includes a number of additional enhancements and new capabilities that offer a very attractive employee workspace and addresses an increasing demand for advanced collaborative features within the Enterprise.

Enhancements to the staff directory include powerful enterprise networking features increasing cross company collaboration by allowing businesses to take advantage of the social dimension of work and engage employees. It actively promotes internal communication, collaboration, idea sharing and cross participation by using facebook/linkedin style micro posts and news feeds. Staff can post their ideas, sites and documents, submit suggestions to each other, comment on others ideas and suggestions as well as view what a another staff member is working on via their status update. This can increase productivity by giving users a method for receiving fast, efficient answers to their questions.

Another key development is the launch of Interact Mobile. People increasingly expect ‘anytime anyplace’ access and The Jacob Nielsen ‘10 Best Intranets of 2010’ report advocates the provision of separate sites for mobile devices.

Commenting on this development, Nigel Danson, Managing Director at Interact, said:

“Many organisations have non-office based employees or workers that spend a considerable amount of time on the move. Without fast, easy access to important information these workers may find it difficult to keep in touch with vital company developments or make sound business judgments. Having instant access to accurate information is particularly important if information and documentation changes frequently. This can often be the case with product pricing and promotions.

“Interact Mobile can easily be used to communicate and collaborate with colleagues by allowing users to update their status, and contribute to document or blog comments”

Mobile users can access information such as HTML documents, uploaded files, documents that provide hyperlinks, blogs, and the Staff Directory. It has a simple and intuitive interface, making it easy for non technical users to get critical information on the move. The interface has been carefully optimised for handheld mobile devices and can be used on many types of smartphones and PDAs, running platforms such as Windows Mobile, RIM BlackBerry, Apple iPhone and the Android Smartphone.

Version 4.6 has extended Interact’s Clever Linker feature. Clever Linker enables users to easily create links to intranet objects – such as documents, events, blogs, discussions, and forms – without needing to know the object’s URL. This popular tool has now been expanded to work in many other areas of Interact, such as the top menu, sections or homepage site menus, or document attachments. Links are easy to create and maintain, and integrate with the Interact security platform. They are also automatically cleaned up on deletion of content.

“This latest Interact release delivers to our customers a range of clever and sophisticated features with enhanced collaborative tools to improve productivity, collaboration, communication and knowledge management” said Nigel Danson, Managing Director, Odyssey Interactive Ltd, “Importantly the introduction of these advanced features is not at the expense of ease of use – Interact remains the most intuitive and user-centric intranet available resulting in rapid user adoption and faster ROI”.

An Enterprise Edition of Interact 4.6 is available for larger organisations with a national, international or group structure. Organisations with offices in multiple countries or locations often have different policies, guidelines and knowledge based on their local laws or marketplace. Interact Enterprise Edition will help them better manage their intranet and be able to serve all staff needs.

Interact 4.6 is also available in a Retail Edition which supports a new sub-license model which provides a cost effective way for occasional users to have full access to all intranet features.
