eZ Publish CMS now available with Granite Horizon In The Cloud.

BY PAUL QUIGLEY

ECM Plus – eZ Publish is now available in a ‘cloud-based’ version to meet the web publishing needs of medium and small businesses.

Dubbed ‘Granite Horizon In The Cloud’, the content management system is available on a SaaS software as a service basis through Granite Horizon LLC, a California-based web developer and implementer.

“Talking to people in the market for a CMS, we saw a real need for a SaaS-type offering” commented Greg McAvoy-Jensen, Granite Horizon’s executive director. “Many organizations can’t muster the internal IT or financial support for a full-blown CMS effort, despite their need.

“We looked at current SaaS offerings and thought that eZ Publish, a proven CMS powerhouse, would provide a uniquely strong answer,” he said “Site owners can concentrate on their content – creating, editing and publishing words and images – without having to worry about hardware, software, upgrades, IT resources or hosting their CMS.

According to the company, GH In The Cloud is based on the eZ Publish platform with added extensions and custom features including a basic mobile site version, e-commerce and payment gateway, Google Analytics integration and RSS import/export. The service is hosted at a Tier IV data center with financial grade security and N+2 redundancy for complete reliability.

eZ said that GH In The Cloud is offered on two levels, determined by the need for custom workflows, storage and bandwidth. It is available to organizations who want to integrate a CMS into an existing site or create an entirely new one.

Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 sallies forth into social content

Alfresco launches Enterprise 3.4

Alfresco launches Enterprise 3.4 into social content space

BY PAUL QUIGLEY

ECM Plus – Alfresco has just announced Enterprise 3.4 as a major new release that promises to deliver an open source platform for social content management.

The company said that this platform will be used by developers and companies to build applications where enterprise content is ‘social-ready’, or shared, collaborated on and syndicated across the web as well as the standard, boring, bureaucratic chore roles of being captured for compliance, retention and control.

Alfresco added that Enterprise 3.4 was now purpose-built for managing content in a social world.

It said that enterprises are increasingly deploying social business systems like Jive, Salesforce.com’s Chatter, Lotus Quickr, Drupal and Liferay, among others, in the hopes of ‘making employees more effective’.

However, Alfresco noted that these social business systems were also creating volumes of unmanaged content if left un-checked.

“Social Content Management is where the capabilities of social business systems and traditional enterprise content management (ECM) meet,” said John Newton, Alfresco CTO. “It is communication and collaboration with a business purpose and it requires a platform that can deliver content for discussion and engagement that then captures the results of that discussion. Alfresco Enterprise 3.4 is that platform, delivered as open source with open standards like CMIS, JSR-168 and RESTful APIs, in order for developers, customers and our partners to manage content and expose repository functionality inside of social business systems.”

Latest version of open source content management system unveiled

BY PAUL QUIGLEY

ECM Plus – Joomla, the open source CMS has just taken the wraps off Joomla 1.6 designed with enhanced site control and a more polished user interface.

Version 1.6 offers new tools include a more robust organisational structure for content control.

“With new features and capabilities such as the hierarchical design of the access control system, semantic XHTML layouts, one-click extension updates and multi-language functionality, Joomla 1.6 has evolved to become the most user-friendly and powerful tool yet to develop a web presence,” said Ryan Ozimek, president of Open Source Matters, a not-for-profit created to provide organization, legal, and financial support to the Joomla project. “This has been accomplished through the tireless feedback and work on 1.6 by the thousands of members of the Joomla community over the past year.”

Joomla said it had been downloaded over 22 million times.

Joimla 1.6 features a w Access Control System which enables site administrators to control who can view and manage content. It also claims to offer unlimited so-called ‘Depth Organizational Model’, which apparently gives site administrators and content creators user-defined category levels that enable the creation of a category tree with as many or as few levels for organising content and other media types as are required.

V1.6 also has ‘One-Click Extension Updates’, which enable users to keep sites secure and controlled by simplifying the process of updating extensions.

1.6 also features ‘Semantic XHTML Layouts’, which provide a baseline for content presentation, as well as offering multi-language functionality.

“The current Joomla Platform provides developers with the tools they need to rapidly build the Web of the future” commented Ron Severdia, a member of the Joomla production leadership team. “Although 1.6 is being released today, the Joomla production team is not resting on its laurels. We’re hard at work developing even more powerful Joomla features for the future, such as new search capabilities and new ways to leverage website content.”

European browser hegemony burns as Firefox bites back

Firefox overtakes Internet Explorer in Europe in browser wars – StatCounter

ECM Plus – It was only a matter of time.

Microsoft’s dominance in the web browser war in Europe is over.

Open source Mozi;;a Firefox overtook Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) to become the number one browser in Europe in December 2010 according to StatCounter, the analytics company.

StatCounter Global Stats reported that in December, Firefox took 38.11% of European market share, compared to IE’s 37.52%.

“This is the first time that IE has been dethroned from the number one spot in a major territory,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “Firefox is mainly maintaining its existing share.”

“We are probably seeing the impact of the agreement between European Commission competition authorities and Microsoft, to offer EU users a choice and menu of browsers from March last,” added Aodhan Cullen.

In North America IE still retains a clear lead in the browser market with 48.92% followed by Firefox (26.7%) and Safari (10.16%).

StatCounter Global Stats is based on aggregate data collected by StatCounter on a sample exceeding 15 billion page views per month (4.9 billion from North America) collected from across the StatCounter network of more than 3 million websites.

StatCounter, which provides free website traffic information, publishes browser stats via StatCounter Global Stats, a free online research tool. It also monitors internet market share battles including Search Engines, Social Media and Operating Systems including mobile.
